Shared File Service for UNIX and Windows
Monday, September 9, 1996
SAS Institute Inc.
Cary, NC
6 PM - General Session
Our program for the evening:
Shared File Service for UNIX and Windows
Network Appliance builds filers, which are special purpose network
file servers that contain no general purpose operating system.
Because they are designed as special purpose appliances, NetApp
file servers are faster, simpler, and more reliable than file
servers based on general purpose operating systems such as UNIX or
Windows.
This embedded software design allows NetApp filers to support
native implementations of both NFS and CIFS. CIFS is the standard
Microsoft file service protocol for Windows and NT, also known as
SMB. This approach avoids the problems of an emulation layer
running on top of UNIX or Windows, such as PC-NFS or Samba.
Shared data access is becoming increasingly important as network
managers try to unify their networking strategy for UNIX and
Windows.
The talk will address the philosophy of the appliance approach, the
use of NetApp filers in UNIX-only networks, and the issue of
supporting both UNIX and Windows clients.
Our Speaker for the evening:
David Hitz
Co-Founder, Director of System Architecture
Prior to founding Network Appliance, Dave Hitz worked as a systems
programmer at Auspex and, before that, in a similar position with the
System V kernel group at MIPS Computer. Hitz studied at George
Washington University, Swarthmore College, and Deep Springs College
and received his B.S.E. in computer science from Princeton University.
