SUMMARY: recycling CDs?

Thanks to all who replied to my query about CD recycling.

Rich Gombert wins the prize for supplying H-P's recycling address:

                Hewlett-Packard
                CD-ROM Recycling Center
                1426 Indianhead Drive
                Menomonie, WI 54751

He goes on to say, "SGI also has a site, but I don't have the address handy."

Thanks, Rich.

I really _like_ John Sechrest's <sechrest@peak.org> solution, cc:ed to
sage-members, in which he requests CDs to create a Kinetic Sculpture
(whatever that is). The other folks here in my office definitely
like this approach, and favor "art" over recycling.

LuftHans <LuftHans@asu.edu> asks,

"Has anyone tried to build something like a skeet launcher for
them? It's not exactly melting them down and building something
else out of them, but it is reusing them..."

No, I've not tried skeet, LuftHans. But one of my younger colleagues
in the office says that you can put CDs in the microwave oven for a few
seconds, and they go "pop" and you see neat blue sparkles coming from
them. He adds, "don't overcook them, though."

                                   * * *

John Peck <jcpii@nmt.edu> from New Mexico Institute of Mining &
Technology writes:

"I'm not sure how many CDs you've accumulated, but I'm looking
for about 2000 to 2500 for use as decoration and contest items here
at New Mexico Tech. I know that the campus radio station would be
interested in several hundred of those."

Another vote for art over recycling!

I'll stop here, and thank the several dozen or so individuals who
responded to my query, both direct and via the list.

(Standard disclaimers apply for microwaving CDs--do so at your own risk!)
