Agreed.  The situation is not really a workable one and trying to fight both
sides of the argument is going to end up lose-lose.

Beyond what's been said by Mark and Dave, this may also be a good time to ask
if you can upstaff one more person to handle the additional complexity.
Although not always attractive, if the extra body can get you back to a nice
place, then you can use their spare cycles to push out project work.
