 I have had two client installations where I did the configuration and 
 modeling of the systems in virtual terms before I did the real work.
 I used a tool that I am working on (http://mln.sourceforge.net) to 
 represent a collection of 10 different virtual machines and ran that
 test before I deployed it for the client.

 I think that virtualization is already doing the job of modeling these
 problems.
